The Only One Who Can Make This Decision is You!
As unpleasant as it might be to have someone, especially your partner, pressuring you to abort, it is ultimately your choice to make.
Before any medical procedure, it is essential to know all the facts. What are the possible risks you might face with an abortion?
There are physical risks with abortion, no matter which procedure you have. These differ from woman to woman, but you deserve to know the facts.
Physical Risks
In a medical abortion (also known as the abortion pill), two drugs are given. The first drug (mifepristone) blocks progesterone, a hormone that supports the pregnancy, and the second drug (misoprostol) causes bleeding and cramping to expel the pregnancy.
There is a risk that pregnancy tissue may remain in your uterus, potentially requiring surgery (this is called an incomplete abortion). There is also a chance of heavy bleeding, which may need medical treatment.
Other risks can occur, including:
- Fever
- Digestive symptoms (i.e., upset stomach)
- Infection
- An ongoing pregnancy (if the drugs don’t work)
In a surgical abortion procedure such as a D&C (dilation and curettage), there is a chance that the surgical instruments used can perforate the uterus, damage the cervix, or cause infection.
There is also a chance of scar tissue developing on the uterine wall, which can cause issues like painful periods and infertility later in life.
Emotional Effects
Emotions from an abortion procedure vary from woman to woman. However, some women are negatively affected by their abortion.
Symptoms are not always immediate. Studies show that many women experience problems even years later.
These can include relationship problems, substance misuse, depression, and even thoughts of suicide.
These emotional effects are valid. You deserve relief and healing.
