What comes to mind when you think about adoption? If you imagine placing your baby on an anonymous doorstep, this is understandable. Many older movies depict adoption in this way. However, modern adoption couldn’t be more different.
Modern adoption is a loving, selfless choice that gives your child hope and a future—and it also gives you options that honor your goals and desires.
How Does Adoption Work?
Before choosing adoption, it’s critical to speak with an adoption counselor to ensure all your questions are answered and your concerns are taken into account.
If you choose adoption, you will work with an adoption agency (or an attorney, if you already know the adoptive family) to create an adoption plan.
An adoption plan is essentially a document that outlines your goals and desires for the adoption process.
What Are the Different Types of Adoption Plans?
There are three types of adoption plans, though each is customizable:
- Open Adoption: This is the most flexible adoption plan, and most modern adoptions are built around an open adoption plan. With open adoption, you get to decide how often you communicate with the adoptive family and child and in what ways (in-person, over the phone, etc.). If you want to maintain a relationship with the adoptive family and child, this is the adoption plan for you.
- Semi-Open Adoption: This is similar to open adoption, but instead, all communication is mediated by a third party, like the adoption agency or attorney. This is a good plan if you don’t want your identifying information to be disclosed.
- Closed Adoption: This is the most restrictive adoption plan. With closed adoption, you and the adoptive family remain anonymous to each other.
How Do I Know If Adoption Is Right for Me?
Adoption is an emotionally complex decision. If you’re considering adoption, asking yourself the following questions can help you work through whether this is the right choice for your situation:
- What are my biggest concerns when it comes to adoption?
- What might my life look like if I choose adoption?
- How might I feel if I choose adoption?
