Just because your pregnancy was unplanned doesn’t mean you can’t create the perfect birth plan. A birth plan establishes each step ahead of time and lets your healthcare provider know precisely what you want the experience to look like.
If you want to create a birth plan but don’t know where to begin, the Ramona Women’s Clinic team can help. We’ve walked alongside many women during labor and delivery.

Before Creating Your Plan
At Ramona Women’s Clinic, we believe knowledge is power. We offer various classes to help you through pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond.
Our free BrightCourse classes teach you about prenatal care, nutrition, the effects of drugs and alcohol on your baby’s development, and giving birth. The more you learn now, the more comfortable you will be when the time comes.
With every class you take, you earn points to use in our Mommy and Me Market. It’s stocked with baby items like diapers, wipes, clothes, toys, etc.
Start Your Birth Plan With the Basics
Your personalized birth plan should start with essential information. Your name and the name of your doctor or midwife should be at the top. You also want to include your expected due date, the names of others you would like in attendance (your partner, family member, etc.), and the location where you intend to give birth.
You’ve Got to Be Flexible
As you create your plan, remember that childbirth doesn’t always go as expected. Include your preferences for pain management, the desired delivery method, the atmosphere you want to create in the room, the clothes you want to wear, and your birthing positions.
Also, provide essential medical information, such as allergies, health conditions, or problems you had with previous deliveries. You can be as detailed as you like, but be prepared to be flexible.
Knowing your preferences helps your healthcare provider advocate for you in the delivery room. Several free sample birth plan templates are available online. Find the one that’s right for you.
Are You Choosing to Place Your Child for Adoption?
If you’re pregnancy was unplanned and you have decided to place your baby for adoption, you can still create a personalized birth plan. You can choose whether or not you wish to have the adoptive mother or couple you’ve selected in the delivery room with you.
Decide if you want photos of you with your baby, and determine if you want to spend time with your baby after giving birth. Ask yourself, “Who do I want to hold the baby first?”
Your well-being is most important, and knowing your wishes at the time of birth helps your adoption coordinator and the attending nurses. As the prospective birth mother, you are in charge of your adoption birth plan.
