Maybe you and your partner talked about abortion as an option, but now you are sure you’re not wanting one. Or perhaps you’ve felt pressure from those around you, even your partner, about this option.

Here are some tips on how to talk to your partner about not wanting an abortion. Go into the conversation confidently, prepared with information on alternative options.

No matter how your partner may respond, know that, ultimately, the final pregnancy decision is yours to make. Ramona Women’s Clinic is here for you if you need pregnancy support.

Preparing for the Conversation

Preparation is key when having tough conversations. You deserve to feel heard by your partner as you share your pregnancy plans with him.

Have a Pregnancy Plan

Have your thoughts and plans together before going into your conversation with your partner. Think and plan for what’s next, including working through questions like:

  • What are the next steps I’m considering?
  • How do I ask him if he wants to parent with me?
  • Will he want to choose adoption with me?

Get Outside Support if Needed

Sometimes, it helps to emotionally prepare for a deep conversation with outside support other than your partner. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or other support person about your plan and ask for advice. Feeling supported along the way is so important.

Time & Place Matters

Be sure to choose a convenient time for the conversation, ideally on a weekend when you both have the capacity to work through your next steps if needed. Choose a place where you are both comfortable and not distracted. If you need to, bring a friend to support you.

Talk With Your Partner

When talking to your partner, he may not need to understand your decision fully, but he must respect it. Do your best to listen to his response and input and see how you both can move forward.

We want to point out that you are not obligated to share with your partner if you feel unsettled about the conversation. If you sense that your safety is at risk, call the National Domestic Abuse Hotline immediately. A representative can help you with the resources you need to find safety.
