Whether studying for a college degree or in high school, attending class while pregnant is challenging. In addition to classes, tests, and papers to write, you’re navigating your body’s physical and emotional changes.

The good news is you have rights as a pregnant or parenting student. Let’s review them.

Title IX Provides Protection for Pregnant Students

You have federally protected rights through Title IX to ensure you can succeed academically. Your school must accommodate your physical and educational needs. According to Title IX, these are your rights as a pregnant student:

  • You can continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities without discrimination.
  • The school must honor excused absences prescribed by your healthcare professional regarding pregnancy or childbirth.
  • You can return to class with the same academic and extracurricular status.
  • Your professors must allow you to complete missed work.
  • The school must protect you from any harassment.
  • The school must make special accommodations, such as a larger desk, more bathroom breaks, access to the elevators, etc.

Some Other Steps to Consider

In addition to your rights as a pregnant student, you may want to consider speaking to your teachers or professors. Fatigue and nausea can make studying difficult, and you’ll want them to understand your situation.

Prioritize your health and prenatal care. Get proper rest, eat healthy foods, and stay hydrated. These steps will help you concentrate. Build a strong support network to help you with tasks such as getting to class, taking notes if you miss a class, and staying on track.

Most importantly, remember you are not alone. The team at Ramona Women’s Clinic is behind you all the way. If you want to pursue your education while pregnant, we have the resources to help ensure your success.
