Abortion in California is legal up to fetal viability. “Viable” means a fetus can continue growing or developing. Once a fetus reaches the 23rd or 24th week, it is often possible to continue developing outside the uterus. California does not provide abortions past this point.

If you are considering abortion for your unplanned pregnancy, be sure to get additional information about procedures, the side effects to expect, and any possible emotional or physical risks. You also need more information about your pregnancy to protect your health. We can provide what you need.

Where Should I Start?

We suggest starting with us. At Ramona Women’s Clinic, we provide free and confidential pregnancy services. Start with free pregnancy testing.

Our tests are lab-quality and administered by medical professionals, so you can be confident you are getting accurate results. If you take a home pregnancy test, follow the instructions carefully. Come to our clinic for a free retest to verify the results.

My Pregnancy Test is Positive. Now What?

Your next step is an ultrasound. A positive pregnancy test indicates the possibility of pregnancy, but ultrasound confirms it.

Experts estimate as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. Because it takes a woman’s body days or weeks to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, it’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test after you have miscarried.

Ultrasound determines if your pregnancy is viable (growing) or if you have had a miscarriage. It also determines how far along you are and the location of the pregnancy.

The length of time you have been pregnant is critical because the FDA approves the use of abortion drugs through 10 weeks of pregnancy only.  You also need to know the pregnancy’s location because if it is growing outside the uterus (ectopic), it could be life-threatening.

Have You Been Tested for an STI?

Pregnancy does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Because many STIs don’t have recognizable symptoms, people often put off getting tested, but the sooner you begin treatment, the better your outcome will be.

STIs can harm you and your baby, so we emphasize that you get tested as soon as possible. We provide free testing and treatment for chlamydia and gonorrhea, two of the most common STIs.

How Can Ramona Women’s Clinic Help Me?

Don’t skip any of these vital steps before an abortion. Verifying your pregnancy with a pregnancy test and ultrasound is critical. You need as much information as possible to make a confident decision. You also want to protect your health by getting tested for an STI first.

Although we do not perform or refer for abortion, we can provide factual information about abortion procedures, the side effects to expect, and potential physical and emotional risks. We can also review California’s abortion laws to see how they might affect you.

Schedule a free and confidential appointment to discuss your situation and get the services you need. We are here for you.
