Finding out you are pregnant when you did not plan for it can make it feel like your world has turned upside down.
In that first wave of worry, abortion can seem like the fastest way to get your life back on track.
Before you settle on any single path, it helps to slow down and look at the full picture.
The truth is that you have more options than you might realize. There are three choices to consider: parenting, abortion, and adoption.
Each option carries its own benefits and challenges, and the decision belongs to you, but you don’t have to carry the weight on your own. Ramona Women’s Clinic is here to help; reach out to schedule your free and confidential appointment to get the answers and support you need.
Parenting
Choosing to raise your baby does not mean doing it alone.
Many women qualify for programs that cover the essentials while they work, study, or find their footing.
You can explore financial help for pregnant women that may include:
- Medicaid and prenatal medical coverage
- WIC benefits for nutrition, formula, and groceries
- Housing and rent assistance
- Childcare subsidies during work or school
- Free diapers, wipes, and baby supplies
Ramona Women’s Clinic also offers free parenting classes for those who feel unprepared, so you can gain support before your baby arrives.
Abortion
Abortion ends the pregnancy, and there are two types.
Medical abortion, often called the abortion pill, uses mifepristone to detach the pregnancy and misoprostol to trigger contractions that empty the uterus.
Surgical abortion involves dilating the cervix and using surgical tools and/or suction to remove the pregnancy tissue.
Both types of abortion carry physical risks you deserve to know about.
Medical abortion can lead to an incomplete abortion that requires a follow-up procedure, heavy and prolonged bleeding, fever, and infection. The FDA information on mifepristone also explains limitations and what pre-existing conditions may make you ineligible.
Surgical abortion can cause perforation of the uterus, scar tissue that may lead to future infertility, damage to the cervix, and infection.
You should also know that both surgical and medical abortion have been linked to mental health risks for women.
Adoption
If parenting feels out of reach right now, making an adoption plan is another loving choice, and it costs you nothing.
The adoption agency or the adoptive family typically covers your pregnancy-related medical care and delivery, and you may qualify for help with rent and groceries.
Modern adoption also gives you a voice. As the birth mother, you decide the adoptive family and how involved you want to be.
The three types of adoption are open, where you choose the family and stay in contact; semi-open, where an agency manages communication while protecting your privacy; and closed, where records are sealed and there is no contact.
