In the face of pregnancy loss, there is often little comfort this world can offer. The only words of comfort worth any attention in such a time are those that shift our gaze from the trial and pain in front of us, fixing our eyes instead on the eternal hope we have in Christ. The hope in knowing one day we will be reunited with the sweet souls that were woven together in our wombs yet were embraced by the arms of Jesus before our own. In our fallen world, the rampancy of sin and suffering threaten to suffocate us with simple and valid questions like, “why?”, yet we can answer, “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”(1 Corinthians 13:12)

Let us hold fast to the truth that life begins at conception, and such a life was knit together by God inside of the womb; and the creation of such a life is the creation of an eternal soul with a purpose and part played in the sovereign will of God. And such a life, no matter how short, will be used for His good and His glory. Though we yearn for answers to our desperate cries of “why?” let us rest in the comfort of His answer, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Let us grasp His promise, to work all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28), knowing that it is in our weakness that His strength is made perfect.(2 Corinthians 12:9) While we are perplexed and afflicted, we are not driven to despair nor crushed so that the life of Jesus may be made manifest through us.(2 Corinthians 4:8-10) And most importantly in the face of such loss, let us remember that God the Father did not simply lose His son, but willingly offered and sent Him to die as a sacrifice in our place. May the gospel be a healing salve that soaks into the raw, unseen wounds of pregnancy loss, a sweet aroma of hope and a light that illuminates the momentary darkness.
